Bapi represents the eighth generation of musical mystics in the das Baul family from Bengal. The belief that “music carries joy and a spiritual message” is central to Baul philosophy. The Baul are troubadours who traditionally went from village to village spreading peace and harmony in the community, and who became guardians of oral traditions. From a young age Bapi was schooled in singing and meditation by his father Purna das Baul and the family went on to form the majestic traditional group Baul Bishwa (the Baul universe) which has toured in Europe and released two CDs internationally. Baul himself has also toured with FunDaMental and Transglobal Underground. Maintaining a strong commitment to traditional instrumentation and to the Baul spirit, Bapi das Baul experiments with electronic and acoustic Baul fusions with his own group Senses.
